A forerunner of the Irish Derby was the Curragh Derby which was first held on Tuesday 27th June 1848 over 1 1/2 miles of The Curragh in which colts carried 8 st 7 lbs and fillies 8 st 2 lbs. There were 10 subscribers at 25 sovereigns each, and the winner was owned by the Duke of Bedford, bred in Ireland by William Disney and ridden by D Wynne. The winner won by 3 lengths. |
